Checking the crankshaft – Opel Kadett

Checking the crankshaft

After dismantling, thoroughly wash all elements in gasoline and blow out with compressed air, including oil channels. To check, that the crankshaft shows no signs of cracks, which disqualify him from further use. All shaft journals must be smooth, no traces of grooves. Using a micrometer, check the ovality of the main and crank pins around the entire circumference. The allowed ovality is 0,006 Mm, and the conicity of each journal 0,01 Mm. In case of greater shape deviations or grooves, the journals should be grinded.

Determine the clearance between the shells and shaft journals, using the 'Plastigage”. The straps are attached between the bushing and the pin and tighten the bearing caps with the recommended torque. After unscrewing the covers, the width of the flattened strip is compared with the pattern provided. For Opel engines, the “Plastigage” type PG-1, green color, with a measuring range from 0,025 into 0,075 Mm. The repair dimensions of the crankshaft and connecting rods are given in section 1.1. The crank pins mentioned there correspond to the crank shells marked with the letter "N”. For all shaft journals of the first sub-size, use the "A" shells and the second - the "B" shells.

In the case of an engine 1.2 SC of the crankshaft shell are marked as shown in the table below.

Installing the crankshaft

Insert main shells into the engine block and coat with engine oil. Place carefully the crankshaft with oil-coated journals on the bushings.

Pay attention to the correct selection of bushings. Coat the inside surface of the front and rear bearing covers with sealant, cover grooves and front bearing bolt pins. Align the front bearing cap when tightening it against the face of the motor.

In the engines 1.3 i 1,6 D Apply sealant to the mating surface of the rear bearing cover. In addition, press the sealant in the form of a shaft with a diameter of approx 6 Mm. Align the front bearing cover before tightening. Install the seal ring at the rear end of the shaft.
