Assembling the main gear and differential – Opel Kadett

Assembling the main gear and differential

The operation of reassembling the main gear and differential is in the reverse order of disassembling All moving parts should be lubricated with gear oil.

■ Place the satellites with washers in the housing and fix them with a provisionally inserted pin. Insert the axis of the satellites in place of the pin. Put the ring gear with washers in the housing. Secure the axis of the satellites..

■ Heat the speedometer drive gear to 80 ° C (in a water bath) and press it onto the housing, until it clicks into the groove. Coat the wheel teeth with anti-friction bearing grease.

■ Heat the main gear drive wheel to 80 ° C. Use a Fabex Castell rod to check the temperature. Screw the wheel to the differential housing with new bolts, paying attention to the correct tightening torque.

■ Press the inner races of the two taper bearings onto the housing under the press

■ Press the outer races of the tapered roller bearings into the gearbox housing and the side cover. If the gearbox has not been removed from the car, the outer race can be inserted into the socket by carefully hammering it.

■ Press the sealing ring with the grease-coated lip into the gearbox housing, which must face outward

■ Fit the complete final drive into the gearbox housing

■ Coat the side cover thread and the O-ring with grease. Screw the side cover into the gearbox housing.

How to adjust the tension of the tapered roller bearings depends on this, whether the gearbox has been removed or left in the car.

In the case of a removed gearbox

■ New tapered roller bearings are preloaded by screwing in the side cover yes, to make the moment of resistance rotated with speed 60 rev / mm of the main gear was 150..180 N cm. The measurement is made with a commercially available dynamometer.

■ When replacing the differential housing, the gearbox housing or bearing race the preload for in-service bearings is set as follows. so that the moment of resistance is 60…100 N cm.

■ If no part was replaced or the axial gear play was not measured during disassembly, the side cover is screwed to cover the previously stamped marks.

■ On the other hand, if the axial gear play has been measured, then the value of the moment of resistance should be kept within 60…100 N cm.

In the case of a fitted gearbox

■ To fit new tapered roller bearings, remove the rear cover from the gearbox housing together with the shafts and gear assembly. Tapered roller bearings are preloaded, by screwing in the side cover, until the moment of resistance is in the range of 150… 180 N cm when rotating at speed 60 rpm.

■ When installing bearings that have already been used or replacing the raceway, differential housing or gearbox housing, first measure the total friction torque in the gearbox gear assembly. Tapered roller bearings are tensioned to the measured value of the torque increased by 80 N • cm.

■ On the other hand, if no part was replaced and no axial play was measured during disassembly, the side cover should be screwed in until the previously applied marks match.

■ If the axial play of the gearbox has been measured before disassembly, then the total moment of friction has to be measured first, then adjust the preload of the bearings, keeping the above moment increased by 80 N cm.

After setting the initial tension of the bearings, screw on the plate securing the side gear cover. Insert the blanking plugs into the hole in the side cover and the side box housing. Stick the seal with grease to the lower cover of the main gear. Screw on the cover, using new bolts.
