Checking and adjusting the toothed belt tension

■ Loosen the alternator mounting and remove the V-belt.

■ Remove the upper and lower toothed belt covers.

■ Tighten the belt, turning the crankshaft o 180 in the direction of movement.

■ Place the Opel-KM 510-A special measuring device on the toothed belt

■ Pass the strip through the points A, B i C. The tensioner C must enter the tooth gap.

■ The toothed belt tension is considered correct, when the instrument points to + 0,5.

■ Not having a measuring device, you can judge the tension of the strap by trying to twist it with two fingers in place 1. If the belt can be turned 90 °, the tension is correctly adjusted. However, it is recommended, to check the belt tension using the tool shortly after such a provisional adjustment. Until then, high engine speeds should be avoided.

■ To adjust the belt tension, loosen the screws securing the coolant pump. The pump is rotated in the engine block using a special Opel-KM-509/421 spanner or a flat spanner with an opening 41 Mm (alternator removed). By turning the pump upwards, belt tension increases, and down - it decreases.

■ The pump mounting bolts are tightened to torque 8 Nm.

■ Remove the gauge and retract the crankshaft. Then make a full shaft revolution in the direction of movement and repeat the measurement, adjusting the belt tension if necessary.

■ Continue checking and adjusting the tension for as long as possible, until consistency of results is achieved.

■ Check injection pump delivery start.

■ Replace the toothed belt cover

■ Install the alternator and install the V-belt.

■ Tighten the V-belt.
