Smart City Coupe – Engine and suspension

The comfort of driving in the city is provided by the sequential gearbox. Thanks to this, the "city flea" can do without the clutch pedal. To change gear, simply pressing the gearshift lever forward (higher gear) or backwards (lower gear). It even works then, when you keep your foot on the gas pedal. You only need to get used to long breaks, that smart allows itself to do with every gear change.
The rear engine is accessed via the boot floor. 600 cubic centimeters of capacity three cylinders convert to 45 or 55 MILES, the weaker version is completely sufficient for city driving. And that's the main purpose of this car, after all. The Suprex vacuum turbocharger enables good "thrust" even in the low engine speed range, so there is no need to change gears frequently. Higher RPMs are absolutely superfluous. If the optimal speed for shifting the gear is missed, the indicator will remind us. But the electronics do not interfere with the shifting process itself.
The humming and singing of the three-cylinder are somewhat reminiscent of an Opel Corsa with the same engine concept. Despite the odd number of cylinders, the compact engine runs surprisingly smoothly and without vibrations. Also at higher speed (for both versions it ends with 135 km/h.) smart is not too loud and hugs the road well.
Like the ESP on a Mercedes A-Class, safety in extreme situations is also ensured in smart by the electronic stabilization system. Trust intervenes in hazardous situations and prevents uncontrolled casting.
