Toyota Yaris II – Engine and suspension

Three units are provided for the drive of the Yaris. Gasoline with a capacity 1,3 l is known from the previous version. Aluminum turbo-diesel 1.4 it was also already used, but in the new car it develops maximum power 90 MILES, instead 75. Without much risk, however, you can make a bet, that the basic version with a gasoline engine will be the most popular 1.0.
We already know this motor from the Aygo. It is a modern unit with a variable valve timing system, the lightest internal combustion engine is said to weigh 67 Kg. Its parameters look good on paper 69 KM and 93 Nm from less than a liter of displacement. This is more than in 1.0 propelling the previous Yaris. But there's a little problem. The new bike has only three cylinders, what – Unfortunately – makes itself felt. Both the noise of operation are bothersome, as well as its vibrations. The designers tried to reduce these inconveniences, e.g.. through the well-thought-out mounting of the unit – the two points on the sides are on the axis passing through the center of mass of the power unit, the third is a reaction bar located at the bottom of the engine compartment. However, these efforts were useless. The older 4-cylinder engine was much calmer, and the 3-cylinder fits the Aygo microcar, but not necessarily to the new Yaris. Pity, because most competitors offer quieter motors – also basic.
With such power, there is nothing to expect, so that the acceleration presses into the seats. To make the car move along the line of other vehicles, a high RPM range is not necessary, and overtaking requires the highest. Fortunately, the gearbox works well with the engine.
Light and not very strong drive unit is not a challenge for the suspension, whose design has not been changed – MacPherson struts are located in the front, at the rear, trailing wishbones and a torsion beam. The differences are reduced to a different geometry of the front suspension and a new type of V-shaped beam. The wider spacing of the rear shock absorbers also takes up less space in the trunk. The suspension works fine. The vehicle behaves stably on a straight road, and also during sudden maneuvers. Suspension comfort is acceptable.
Electric power steering is standard. It is difficult to talk about the extraordinary precision of this system, but with a smooth ride there is nothing to complain about. The car's high maneuverability is commendable – maneuvering the Yaris is a breeze. The braking system requires a bit of a feel. A "rubbery" brake pedal is in the way, impeding the precise dosing of the pressure force.
