Dismantling the steering shaft assembly

This operation can also be performed without removing the steering shaft assembly from the vehicle . Signal and wiper switch, the lock cylinder and the ignition block can be replaced without removing the steering wheel.

■ Disconnect the battery mass cable.

■ Release the signal button latches on the steering wheel.

■ Position the steering wheel for straight ahead.

■ Remove the steering wheel from the shaft, using the appropriate puller. The wheel must not be knocked out of the spline.

■ If the slip ring in the steering wheel hub is to be replaced, remove it after releasing the latches. The new ring is pressed in like this, so that the indicator lever driver points to the left. The sliding surface of the ring must be smeared with the agent ,,Contact fix” firm Hans Bauer.

■ Unscrew the four screws of the combined switch cover and remove both halves of the guard.

■ Pressing the latches from above and below, Release the fastening of the signal switch and the wipers to the stalk switch housing. The switch with a lever cannot be dismantled and must be replaced if damaged.

■ Pull out the plug of the combined switch.

■ In order to remove the switch housing, pry and pull out the cap located from above in the steering shaft tube. Turn the switch housing counterclockwise and pull it out

■ To remove the ball bearing from the housing of the composite switch, use a suitable puller. When pulling it out, you need to spread the catches of the opposite fitting. When fitting the new bearing, pay attention to the thrust washer, in front of the bearing and the positions of both leaf springs

By inserting the bearing into the housing, the springs must be pressed in.

■ In order to remove the lock cylinder, press the locking spring with the appropriate steel bar, located in the hole on the right side of the shaft tube.

■ To remove the ignition switch, Disconnect the wiring harness to the ignition switch and unscrew both of them from the housing, facing screws. The housing can only be removed after the shaft tube has been removed.

On the engine compartment side, unscrew the clamp bolt on the steering shaft. Further disassembly activities are described in the previous section. Assembly is in reverse order. The notch on the steering shaft must .. "match" with the screw hole in the clamp. The lock cylinder and key switch block must be in the same position. A new plug must be used to secure the combination switch housing to the shaft tube. At the end of the operation, the center position of the steering gear must be checked.
