By developing this car, constructors and designers have completely abandoned drawing boards. In their place, integrated and connected to the Internet and externet were used, computer system design, called C3P, which enabled the simultaneous work of Ford's construction teams from the USA, Great Britain and Japan.
The entire development cycle of the new model has been shortened by 13 months compared to the previous methods and it was decided, that the next Ford models will be built in a similar way.
The shape of a Ford Mondeo, developed by stylists under the guidance of Chris Bird, resembles the current car, but on a line in the direction of New Edge (That, Puma, Focus). In Mondeo, which is produced in versions 4- and 5-door and station wagon, the shape of the headlights does not look as aggressive as in the smaller models, but it distinguishes the car on the street.
The housing covers standard halogen headlamps with improved lighting parameters, a xenon system is provided as an option. Large-size rear lampshades with a triangular shape and a base, up to half a meter (Exactly 560 Mm), give the rear of the car a distinctive look, though, as we found out during the night rides, most of their surface is covered with grilles. On the station wagon, the vertical rear lights extend all the way to the roof. In the side part of the body, the wheel arches of this shape are strongly accentuated, that they fit both standard 16-inch wheels (formerly 14- and 15 inch), as well as wheels available on request 17- and 18 inch. Effective care was taken to refine the body's aerodynamics: the air resistance coefficients are for the 4-door version 0,30, 5-door 0,31, and for the station wagon 0,32.
Interior, due to the enlarged dimensions of the car, it is spacious; there is more room for the passengers' legs, seated in the rear seats; more headroom; the distance from the seat cushion to the roof is to the rear 1040 Mm, in front of 1000 Mm.
The new instrument panel with easy-to-read indicators is covered with a granular material. It gently passes into the console, located between the front seats. The chrome bezels of the speedometer look pretentious, tachometer, time clock; originally, however, is the housing of the gear lever. Only one can or cup holder is designed. The driver has an opening armrest with space for records or cassettes, glasses can be stored in the glove box, located above the top of the front window.
The trunk of a four-door car with a capacity 500 dm3 has a width 1350 Mm, which between the wheel arches is reduced to 988 Mm. The trunk length is 1000 Mm, and after folding the seats 1950 Mm. It is not possible to transport logs – the hole provided for this purpose is missing in the rear backrest. In cars with estate bodies, the luggage compartment has a capacity of 540 dm3 has a flat floor, and thanks to the changed rear wheel suspension system, its elements do not penetrate into the interior of the vehicle.
