Exhaust system replacement – Opel Kadett

Exhaust system replacement

The construction of the exhaust system is adapted to the different types of engines. In addition, the main exhaust pipe can have a different shape depending on the type of bodywork.

■ Unscrew the two (engine 1,2) or four (engines 1,3 and 1,6 D) the nuts securing the front exhaust pipe to the manifold. Pull the fastening screws out of the flange.

■ Unscrew the bracket on the front exhaust pipe (engines 1,3 and 1,6 D).

■ Loosen the clamp in front of the rear muffler. Pull the pipe out and disconnect the front exhaust pipe with the front muffler from the chassis. If the tube cannot be pulled out, it should be cut with a ball.

■ Unscrew the rear muffler bracket and remove the muffler together with the pipe.

Install the new exhaust system without tension, by adjusting the arrangement to the shape of the chassis. By the way, you need to replace the fastening elements, especially rubber hangers. The flange gaskets should also be replaced. All connections may only be tightened after the alignment of the entire system has been aligned.

Engine exhaust system 1,2 consists of a single front tube, main pipe (with wall thickness in Caravan and LCV body versions 2 Mm, instead 1.5 Mm), exhaust pipe and two silencers.

Engine exhaust system 1,3 and 1,6 D consists of a double front tube, main pipe, exhaust pipe and two silencers. System components can be dismantled individually for repair. The mufflers are pulled to the rear. In the engines 1,3 and 1,6 D between the front exhaust pipe and the front muffler pipe is an articulated flange with a graphite gasket. To replace this gasket, unscrew the front muffler at the flange, off the hanger and pull it back a little. This will gain access to the seal.
