Fiat Punto 1 Sporting Engine and Suspension

The Sporting was equipped with an eight-valve engine with a capacity of 1,6 l. Subsequently, however, the Italian company gave up this unit and replaced it , sixteen-valve with a capacity 1,2 l. It is admittedly smaller, but it offers better performance and lower fuel consumption. This engine is based on the well-known eight-valve unit of the same capacity. The head, inlet and outlet manifolds were completely redesigned there, which allowed for a significant increase in power and improved work culture. Maximum power 86 KM is achieved at 6000 obr./min, while the maximum torque – 113 Nm at 4500 obr./min. As a result, Sporting can accelerate to 177 km/h, a only 10,5 s it takes him to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h. It is worth noting the fact, that 90 proc. maximum torque is available to the driver from 2500 obr./min. In reality, however, a really dynamic drive is ensured only by pressing the gas pedal deeply and overclocking the engine speed in individual gears.. The consequence of this is quite a lot of noise inside the car and fuel consumption in excess of 9,5 l/100 km. If we don't spin the engine above 3500 turnover, Fiat's fuel consumption on the out-of-town route will drop even to 5,5 l/100km.

The Sporting uses a manual five-speed gearbox to transfer the drive. Compared to other Punto versions, it has a shorter gear ratio, which on the one hand improves driving dynamics, on the other hand, it requires more frequent movements of the lever. You can also have reservations about the precision of its work. Flexibility in fifth gear is also not the best. A reduction is indicated during overtaking maneuvers.

Punto suspension collects good notes. It is independent, and its design uses the front MacPherson struts, lower transverse control arms, coil springs, telescopic stabilizer and hydraulic shock absorbers. There are trailing wishbones at the rear, coil springs, stabilizer and telescopic shock absorbers, gas. As befits a car with sports ambitions, the suspension is quite stiff and ensures safe, fast driving. Punto Sporting sticks well to the road, and in sharp turns it does not toss in reverse. It is worse on bad surfaces, because bigger unevenness causes quite strong vibrations of the body. On the other hand, trouble-free maneuvering of the car is guaranteed by the power steering. The big plus is also a small one, 9,7-meter turning circle. The downside, which can have a major impact on driving safety, the braking distance is too long. Model tested with speed 100 km / h stopped after driving 44,7 m, even though the car was equipped with ABS.
The overall impression of driving the Sporting is positive. The car has an attractive look, sporty silhouette, suspension and a fairly dynamic engine. The tested model also offered extensive equipment. In addition to the aforementioned support and ABS, there are two airbags here, electric window adjustment, central lock, immobilizer and air conditioning.
